Student Research Symposium 2024

Dear fellow students,

As you might have heard already, on Wednesday the 22nd of May we are hosting this year’s Student Research Symposium for the Master’s Biomolecular, Biomedical and Neurosciences in the O|2 building from 13:00.

This year’s symposium is all about networks: from the cell to the brain to social. Our guest speakers will give interesting talks about the networks studied in their field of research and we will have a workshop session to sharpen your networking skills, tailored to both beginner and experienced networkers.

As every year, we will host the poster market where students can present posters on their own (internship) research. At the end of the symposium, the winners for the best poster and the VU:Sci microscopy contest will be announced and awarded a prize! Afterwards, there will be a small borrel for you to network or catch up with your fellow students.

REGISTER HERE or scan the QR code.

The symposium is a great opportunity to learn about local (internship) research and share your internship experiences with students during our afternoon poster sessions. All attendees should register (even if you are not presenting) by 17th May.

If you are presenting at the poster market, see below for our Abstract and Poster Guidelines!

Your abstract should demonstrate that your (internship) research has/will have a valuable contribution to the scientific field you are working in. Abstracts should be written in English and not exceed 1000 characters (approximately 250 words). Usually, an abstract dedicates one or two sentences each towards: Background/context, materials & methods, results, and conclusion or interpretation. Abstract subheadings are not necessary.

Your abstract should include a concise title, a list of the first and last names of all authors who contributed to the work (e.g., yourself, supervisors, and/or technicians) and up to 3 keywords to help us organize the posters by theme.

We realize that your internships may still be ongoing, thus preliminary and pilot data are welcome. It is also acceptable if your poster differs from your original abstract. Literature reviews may only be presented as posters if they are in a meta-analysis format or have formed part of one of your internships in your master program.

Data privacy: Your abstracts will not be published online, and your registration details are stored securely only by our committee (using qualtrics, a GDPR-approved secure form). The poster market will only be attended by registered local staff and students. The abstract book will be shared digitally with only registered attendees the week of the event, unless you indicate a preference otherwise.

Abstract writing tips:

The symposium is for a broad student and academic audience. Take this into account while writing your abstract. Additionally:

1. Write in past tense and avoid passive

2. Make sure any terms or acronyms are defined if needed and avoid too much jargon

3. Give only a concise summary of the findings, sample sizes or p-values only where relevant

4. No need to cite references or bibliography

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 10th of MAY

We recommend you create a portrait orientation poster of A0 size for best viewing. You will be responsible for printing your own poster, please discuss reimbursement with your internship supervisor. If your supervisor is not able to support you, you can contact us at srscommittee24@gmail.com. For VU printing services, you could mail/visit the on-campus VU printerette (Repro VU, repro@vu.nl, VU main building, KA-30 (basement)) or their webshop (see https://vu.nl/en/about-vu/more-about/print-services for more information). With most services you should print at least one day before you need your poster. However, it is recommended that you print your poster earlier to check if the quality of the poster looks good to you. On the day of the event, you should hang your own poster between 12:30-13:00.

There will be a poster prize, which will be awarded at the award ceremony at the end of the symposium! We have invited some researchers and teachers from different fields to form a jury and evaluate your posters.

More information will follow by email to registered attendees in May.
